La Mesa Motel, Route 66 Santa Rosa, New Mexico

The La Mesa Motel is one of your typical non-descript type of motels that boasts a fabulous mid-century neon sign! It was built in the mid-1940s by the Massey family and then expanded in the early 1960’s when Evaristo Gallegos bought it and added 9 more guest units. In 1999 Gallegos son became the operator.

When we cruised through Santa Rosa with our buddies from The Ride for the Relay, it was nearing dusk and the sky was ablaze with a striking sunset. I scrambled around town as fast as I could taking pictures of the different motels and restaurants along this stretch of 66 with that incredible sky as a backdrop. I have to admit – this sign was one of our favorites.
