Delgadillo’s Snow Cap, Route 66, Seligman Arizona

Delgadillo’s Snow Cap on Route 66 in Seligman, Arizona is about as vintage Mother Road as you’re ever going to get. Juan Delgadillo is legendary in the Route 66 community for not just starting this super cool ice cream stand in 1953 but for helping found the Historic Route 66 Association of Arizona with his brother, Angel.

This organization was responsible for helping bring attention to the great businesses along Route 66 after the Interstate Highway system detoured the majority of traffic away from the small towns that had previously flourished.

Juan had was a real sense of humor in the way he decorated his small diner/ice cream stand and created a fanciful garden in the back. For a photographer, there are no end of fun pics to take here. This particular image was taken in January 2012 when my husband Richard and I did a whirlwind trip through Arizona and onto Palm Desert. Most of the town was locked up, but this place looked great even in the winter.
