Dapper Dan, the Used Car Man

In 1977, on a road trip through Virginia, I came across this amazing sign in Richmond and it stopped me in my tracks! Wow! This guy really has a sense of humor. And most likely a fair amount of money to have commissioned a neon sign with so many letters.

I couldn’t find much information online about him except his name was Howard H. Hughes (no relation) and that he was an eccentric and successful businessman. One of the pictures was from 1955 and featured the historic Trinity Methodist Church that lost its steeple when Hurricane Hazel blew through town.

I always invite anyone with more knowledge of this sign to write to me so I can fill in more details.
