Crossing at the New Mexico Arizona border

There’s no big sign to tell you when you’ve crossed the New Mexico Arizona border on Route 66. It happened without anyone knowing it. Our whole group (on the Ride for the Relay) stopped here for a break and someone yelled “welcome to Arizona”. Looking off to the south I marveled at the most breathtaking view of clouds racing across the sky and creating fascinating patterns of light and shadow on the distant rocky hills. When I reflect on these timeless landscapes, I sense that not much has changed since The Mother Road was first constructed. Folks traveling in beat up cars and trucks during the Dust Bowl would have seen these exact hills in the distance and most likely marveled at their grandeur as well. To have made it this far on their journey, they would now be faced with many miles of desert heat ahead of them. We were glad we had air conditioning!
