11 Aug Wooden shoes, Dec 1, 1944
It’s interesting how concerned my Dad was about the gifts he had sent home for Mary and all their friends and family. He’s mentioned it repeatedly in his letters: perfume for Mary and Mom, wooden shoes that she could keep or give to their friends. In this letter he approves of her choices and how she’ll be dispersing what he’s sent.

MARY DARLING, TWO OLD (BUT GOOD) LETTERS FROM MY BABY TODAY. (FUNNY HOW THEY’VE BEEN COMING IN TWOS HERE LATELY). ALSO ONE FROM MOM. YOURS OF OCT 23 & 25. PARTICULARLY HAPPY TO GET THE 23RD, BECAUSE IT TOLD ABOUT THE NIGHT AT THE LEMONTS AND THE PACKAGES. YOU MAY SEND ONE OF THE BOTTLES OF PERFUME TO MOM, IF YOU WANT, ALSO ONE TO YOUR MOTHER. SUIT YOURSELF, TO ME IT’S NO NEVER MIND. I THOUGHT YOU MIGHT WANT TO USE THE WOODEN SHOES AS GIFTS TO MAYBE MONA, DOLORES, MAYBE EVEN EILEEN OR SHEILA. THAT, TOO IS UP TO YOU. YOUR PLAN FOR DEALING WITH ALL OF SAME IS FINE WITH ME. YOUR PURCHASE OF STOVE AND ICEBOX WAS VERY REASONABLE, BUT WHY DO YOU NEED SAME. I THOUGHT SAME CAME WITH HOUSE. AND HOW IS BOARDER (TENANT) COMING ALONG? (I JUST HAPPENED TO THINK, MAYBE ABOVE IS FOR HER. YOU’VE NEVER MENTIONED WHAT HAPPENED ABOUT RENTING THE OFFICE PART OF THE HOUSE EXCEPT FOR YOUR INTENTION OF DOING SAME. NOW I KNOW (FROM YOU) THAT YOU GOT ABRAHAMS PICTURES. AIN’T THEY GOOD, THOUGH? THAT WAS A HELL OF A SWELL BUNCH OF GUYS. I STILL HEAR FROM A FEW OF THEM OCCASIONALLY. NO, I HAVE NOT YET RECEIVED ANY EQUITY THINGS. DAMN, I DON’T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT WHAT IS HAPPENING IN THE THEATER ANYMORE. IT IS SO NICE TO HAVE LETTERS TO ANSWER. TRYING TO FIND THINGS TO WRITE ABOUT CAN BECOME QUITE A BORE OVER HERE. I TRY TO MAKE THEM AS INTERESTING AS I CAN, BUT MOST OF THEM MUST BE PRETTY DULL. MOM MENTIONED IN THIS LETTER THAT SHE HADN’T HEARD FROM YOU IN A LONG TIME. SHE’LL BE GLAD TO GET YOUR LETTER. ALSO SAID THAT THEY MIGHT GET A FEMALE SCHNAUZER TO MATE WITH THEIR DOG PRINCE AND GIVE US A PUP. THEY PAID (HMPH, NO DOLLAR SIGN ON THIS ENGLISH TYPEWRITER) SEVENTY FIVE DOLLARS FOR HIM, SO HE MUST BE A GOOD ONE.
NO NEWS FROM HERE AT ALL, SWEETHEART, EXCEPT THAT I SENT YOU A VERY CHEEZEY CIG. BOX WITH A LOT OF SILVER DUTCH (U.S. COINED) MONEY TODAY, WITH ALL THE LOVE I COULD PACK IN.
