26 NOV 1944 V-MAIL

HOLLAND

HELLO, HONEY, SAME OLD TALE OF WOE *** NO MAIL! GUESS THEY MUST BE USING ALL AVAILABLE SPACE FOR PACKAGES, BECAUSE THAT’S ABOUT ALL ANYBODY GETS HERE, BUT I HAVEN’T EVEN GOT A PACKAGE YET. AH, WELL, WAR IS HELL. WEATHER THE PAST COUPLE OF DAYS HAS BEEN QUITE BEAUTIFUL. OF COURSE THERE HAS BEEN A DRIZZLE NOW AND THEN, BUT MOSTLY SUNSHINE AND FAIRLY WARM. GOLLY, IF IT WOULD ONLY KEEP UP AND GIVE THE AIR FORCE A CHANCE IT WOULD CUT OFF A LOT OF TIME IN THIS DAMN WAR. WE’RE ALL GREATLY CHEERED BY THE NEWS OFLATE, HOWEVER. (THE DAMN LIGHTS JUST WENT OFF SO I’M NOW EXPERIMENTING AND TYPING BY MY FLASHLIGHT WHICH I’VE HUNG UP ABOVE. QUITE INTRIGUING, BECAUSE I CAN’T SEE THEY KEY BOARD, ONLY WHAT IS COMING OUT, AND SO FAR IT LOOKS ALL RIGHT.) TONIGHT WAS MY NIGHT OFF SO I WENT TO THE MOVIES (AS ALWAYS). A JACK HALEY HARRIET HILLIARD OPUS CALLED “TAKE IT BIG”. I’VE SEEN MUCH WORSE, BUT EITHER THE FILM WAS SHOT OR THE PROJECTIONIST WAS HALF-SHOT, BECAUSE EVERY COUPLE OF MINUTES THEIR VOICES WOULD DROP TO A BASS AND WOULD COME OUT WITH A SLOW DRAWL UNTIL THE OPERATOR WOULD SHUT THE DAMN THING OFF. THEN HE’D START IT UP AND YOU’D SEE IT RUNNING AWAY WITH ITSELF. AFTER ABOUT AN HOUR OF SAME, I GOT DISGUSTED (ALONG WITH ABOUT HALF OF THE OTHER GUYS IN THE THEATER) AND WALKED OUT.

I INTENDED WRITING TO MICKEY AND A FEW OTHER PEOPLE TONIGHT BUT THIS LIGHT SITUATION GIVES ME A VERY GOOD EXCUSE NOT TO. GOOD THING THAT I WASHED AND SHAVED BEFORE I SAT DOWN TO WRITE. WE HAVE TO SHAVE EVERY DAY HERE, AND WHAT WITH HEATING (CAN’T READ) (AT BEST) IT’S A BORING
PAPPY

He hand wrote:

Hey, didn’t notice the end of the paper – nothing important except I love you
