Green Dolphin Motel, Old Orchard Beach, Maine
Old Orchard Beach is a great beach town just south of Portland, Maine. We have stayed here numerous times in our quest to spend a few fun days at the “shore” and enjoying Maine in the summer is a treat for all north easterners. As a fan of the older genre of motels, restaurants, and signage, this town has provided a wealth of inspiration. The Green Dolphin is just one of many images I have documented in photographs and plan to paint a number of them.
This painting represents a real departure for me from straight ahead documenting great signs, to creating an powerful image that tells a story. Only the viewer can determine what that story is, as the painting leaves a lot to the viewers imagination. My husband Richard insisted that I put a light on in the motel window, which really added the final touch to the sense of mystery. I love that the welcome sign is turned off since there’s No Vacancy.
