12 Oct Gay Parita Gas Station, Route 66 Missouri
What a joy to visit roadside enthusiast Gary Turner’s Gay Parita’s Sinclair gas station in Paris Junction while we were on The Ride for the Relay Route 66 adventure in September 2014. Gary was so kind as to host an amazing lunch for our rather large group with hot dogs, baked beans, sodas and chatted with us for a few hours. The original station was built in 1934 but burnt to the ground in 1955. Gary knew how much people loved stopping in for gas, a cold drink and conversation, so he rebuilt it and put a bunch of old cars and trucks around the property, as well as a great little gift shop, and voila – the people they did come! Sadly, we may have been some of the lucky ones to be hosted by Gary as he passed on the following year. Let’s hope his family will keep this legend alive.
