02 Mar Dhobi Ghat, Mumbai
Our first day in Mumbai, we visited the enormous Dhobi Ghat, the central laundry for the city of Mumbai. Clothing hung from every possible surface and line. The middle section contained massive concrete wash tubs filled with water. Strong, lean men in loin cloths were swinging clothing wildly through the air, then pounding onto the stones. The outer rooms provided associated services such as “stitching”, pressing, and folding (shown in this picture). This touching scene reminded me of one of Vermeer’s classic paintings!
