10 Feb Café, Somewhere out West
From time to time I’ll run across a bunch of old photos I’ve taken that either weren’t filed properly or put away at a time I had a different filing system than I do now. Happily, I ran across a bunch of old slides from photos taken in the 1980’s and found this sign. As with many signs the background was vague and uninspiring, so I decided to take it out altogether and put the sign on a strong sky blue background. I also decided to make the painting quite large for impact. This was an out of the box breakthrough for me – to create something intentionally that did not necessarily reflect reality.
The impact is strong, and viewers generally stand in awe that this painting is not a photograph!
Oil on canvas, 40×60″
