03 Oct Blue Swallow Motel, Tucumcari, New Mexico
I’ve seen pictures of the classic Route 66 Blue Swallow Motel in Tucumcari, New Mexico for years and couldn’t wait to see it with my own eyes. When we first walked up the office was closed, but there were still lots of great photos to be taken, so I wandered around appreciating all the love that’s gone into keeping the place so nice. That’s when we bumped into a woman cleaning the rooms, who upon prompting told us she was one of the owners. What a delight she was. Her name is Nancy Mueller and she told us that she and her husband Kevin had only owned the place for about three years. They came from Michigan looking for a new life when the economy went south. From all appearances their decision was a good one as it appears to be a thriving enterprise with a lovely office and gift shop. I was so glad she opened up her small store for us so I could buy yet one more Route 66 t-shirt for my collection! I wear it with pride, as someone who has traveled the entire route. We’re an interesting world-wise bunch that just has a crazy fascination with a road that we can’t get out of our hearts! Thank you Nancy and Kevin for keeping for the dream alive!
